Endospores of halophilic bacteria of the family Bacillaceae isolated from non-saline Japanese soil may be transported by Kosa event (Asian dust storm)

Abstract: The numbers of total bacteria of inland soil samples were in a range from 1.4 x 10(7)/g to 1.1 x 10(6)/g. One tenth of the total bacteria was occupied by endospore-forming bacteria. Only very few of the endospore-forming bacteria, roughly 1 out of 20,000, are halophilic bacteria. Most of the halophilic bacteria were surviving as endospores in the soil samples, in a range of less than 1 to about 500/g soil. Samples collected from seashore in a city confronting Tokyo Bay gave the total numbers of bacteria and en… Show more

“…A few studies have specifically enriched for halotolerant microbes in common oligohaline soils (Echigo et al 2005; Usami et al 2007; Chen et al 2010; Chen et al 2011a, b; Mendpara et al 2013; Jhala et al 2015). The most extensive project isolated over 500 strains of bacteria from low-salt (<20 mg NaCl g −1 soil) soils near Tokyo Bay by direct plating onto medium containing 20% NaCl (Echigo et al 2005, 2007, 2010).…”

“…Studies have indicated that culturable halobacteria were sometimes dispersed with Asian dust (Echigo et al, 2005;Hua et al, 2007;Maki et al, 2010Maki et al, , 2011. On the other hand, culture-independent methods revealed that various types of bacteria were present in desert soils and were transported in Asian dust (Yamaguchi et al, 2012;Maki et al, 2014).…”
