“…Conservative procedures for controlling digestive tract bleeding include cold water rinsing through a sonde or endoscope, local diffusion or injection of vasoconstrictive agents, and other measures differently reported; spraying of clotting factors (Linscheer and Fazio 1979), clipping hemostasis (Hayashi et al 1975), high frequency current coagulation (Papp 1975;Matek et al 1979), and laser coagulation (Kiefhaber et al 1977). Either of them, however, proving more or less faulty, the present author was struck with an idea that whether bleeding in the digestive tract could be suppressed if the tissue involving a bleeding site was locally solidified.…”

“…However, development of endoscopic hemostasic treatment (Papp 1975;Kiefhaber et al 1977;Asaki 1981) has made it possible to obtain hemostasis of gastrointestinal bleeding at the time of emergency endoscopy. As shown in Table 1, emergency endoscopy was performed in 160 cases of overt bleeding from the upper gastrointestinal tract and in 68 cases (42.5%) which were diagnosed to have active bleeding or fresh clots and the local injection of pure ethanol was performed with success in all of them.…”

“…The mechanism of hemostatic action of laser beam irradiation (Frtihmorgen et al 1976;Kiefhaber et al 1977) is essentially the same as that operating in the foregoing procedure, viz, local vasoconstriction and degeneration and necrosis of the vascular wall via protein denaturation and dehydration.…”

“…1981), thermocoagulation by means of high-frequency heating (Papp 1975;Matek et al 1979) and photocoagulation with laser beam irradiation (Fruhmorgen et al 1976; Kiefhaber et al 1977) (Table 1). Recently, a method of hemostasis by injecting absolute ethanol has been developed at our department.…”
