Endoscopic ultrasonography-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy in follow-up patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumours

Abstract: EUS-FNAB against SMTs was useful for the differential diagnosis of SMT and the analysis of c-kit mutation. The c-kit mutation might not be one of the predictable markers for rapid tumour growth.

“…Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) with fi ne-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is useful as it allows for the detection of gene mutations. [39][40][41] Computed tomography has proven useful for staging and detecting small bowel or gastric lesions with exophytic growth. According to Nishida et al, screening with multidetector CT scans should be feasible for detecting occult symptomatic GIST.…”

“…But one case in our study with a diameter of 3.2 cm was eventually diagnosed as leiomyoma by pathology. Endoscopic ultrasonography guided fine needle aspiration (FNA) can further help to diagnose the submucosal masses [15] . EUS is useful in determining the therapy for SMT of the large intestine [16] .…”

“…Estimation of vascularity by contrastenhanced US seems more useful than the other diagnostic methods, particularly for small GISTs, those less than 50 mm in diameter. Because the specimens by endoscopic US guided biopsy 34,35 were very small, it is difficult to count mitosis of the tumors with insufficient materials. The "estimation of vascularity" was supposed to enable more accurate diagnosis before resection.…”
