“…The use of EUS for diagnosis of SMTs was described more than a decade ago and is now established as the most sensitive diagnostic procedure for detection of SMTs with other available diagnostic methods, such as endoscopy, bar− ium series, transabdominal ultrasound, and CT, only EUS has the distinct advantage of visualizing the individual layers of the bowel wall and reliably distinguishing the lesions arising in one of these layers from the masses caused by extrinsic compression. Zhang and Nian [12] compared extracorporeal ultrasound, CT, and EUS and reported 22 %, 28 %, and 100 % accuracy, respectively, in the diagnosis of SMTs. Specific tumor types are known to be associated with specific layers of the gastrointestinal wall.…”

“…Endoscopic ultrasonography has been established as the most sensitive diagnostic procedure for SML 8–10 . Compared with other diagnostic methods available, such as transabdominal ultrasound and CT, only EUS has the ability to visualize the individual layers of the wall of the bowel and to distinguish lesions within a single layer reliably.…”

“…It has been reported that US and CT established the diagnosis in only 16% of cases, compared with 100% for EUS. In another comparison study of US, CT and EUS reported an accuracy of 22, 28, and 100%, respectively, in differentiating subepithelial tumors from extraluminal compression [39].…”
