Endoscopic optical coherence tomography with wide field-of-view for the morphological and functional assessment of the human tympanic membrane

Abstract: An endoscopic optical coherence tomography (OCT) system with a wide field-of-view of 8 mm is presented, which combines the image capability of endoscopic imaging at the middle ear with the advantages of functional OCT imaging, allowing a morphological and functional assessment of the human tympanic membrane. The endoscopic tube has a diameter of 3.5 mm and contains gradient-index optics for simultaneous forward-viewing OCT and video endoscopy. The endoscope allows the three-dimensional visualization of nearly … Show more

“…However, there are several practical considerations that need to be overcome from a clinical perspective. Because the light used in OCT should pass through the curvature of the external canal, the OCT system combined with a surgical microscope or endoscope was developed for this purpose [5,[16][17][18][19]. Microscope-integrated intraoperative OCT is already commercially available for imaging of ophthalmic surgical maneuvers [15,16,20].…”

“…Eine Beurteilung der Schwingungsfähigkeit ist derzeit mit den Mitteln der etablierten Diagnostik noch nicht möglich. Ein Ansatz, die postoperative Schwingungsfähigkeit des (rekonstruierten) Trommelfells zu messen stellt die optische Kohärenz Tomografie (OCT) dar [8][9][10].…”

“…To overcome the diagnostic challenges of conventional otoscopy, optical coherence tomography (OCT) has been implemented in probe-based, portable systems for middle ear imaging [ 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ]. Other form factors or beam-delivery systems, such as endoscope- and catheter-based OCT systems, have also been investigated for imaging the middle ear in vivo [ 15 , 16 ] and the Eustachian tube ex vivo [ 17 , 18 ]. OCT, first developed in 1991 [ 19 ], provides depth-resolved, cross-sectional images similar to ultrasound imaging, though employing near-infrared light instead of acoustic waves.…”
