Endoscopic Management of Benign Sinonasal Tumors: A Decade of Experience

Abstract: With the treatment of more complex cases being undertaken endoscopically, the need for individual therapeutic consideration and close follow-up is stressed. The combination of removal of benign tumors endoscopically and endoscopic surveillance in the outpatient setting has allowed a less radical surgical approach while resulting in decreased morbidity and better tumor control.

“…Endoscopic approaches provide excellent visualization and tumor resection, while avoiding external facial incisions and complications associated with such techniques. Most previous series reporting on endoscopic resection of sinonasal neoplasms have focused upon inverted papilloma or other benign neoplasms, with recurrence rates of 10-20% [1,2] .…”

“…As experience with endoscopic surgery grows, it is being increasingly applied to neoplastic disease of the sinuses [1] . While most reports have dealt with endoscopic resection of inverted papilloma [2] , there have been few case reports describing endoscopic resection of vascular neoplasms, and most of these have described endoscopic resection of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofi bromas [3][4][5][6] .…”

“…compression of the optic nerve or chronic rhinosinusitis [2,7,8]. On the contrary, radical resection of paranasal ossifying fibromas, particularly fibromas of the juvenile type, is widely considered the treatment of choice due to their locally aggressive behaviour [1,3,[8][9][10][11].…”

“…The classic radiologic features of a ground glass appearance make this condition easier to confirm without surgical intervention. Management is generally conservative [12], because many of these lesions have slow growth rates and often slow or regress after puberty.…”
