“…Laser energy can be applied as endoscopic laser therapy in stenosing primary colorectal tumors or as LITT in liver metastases, whereas, laser recanalization of malignant intestinal stenoses is a palliative treatment and purely experimental at present, especially with regard to the risk of intestinal perforations [7]. A basic problem of thermal laser application is the lack of appropriate treatment monitoring during the intervention [8,9].…”

“…Thus, almost half of all patients with colorectal carcinomas can no longer be considered for curative therapy at the time of diagnosis, which necessitates the development of alternatives to surgery. Local therapeutic application of laser light is considered promising, since it can be used for local ablation of colorectal primary tumors and for laser-induced thermotherapy (LITT) of liver metastases, whereas, laser recanalization of malignant intestinal stenoses is a palliative treatment and purely experimental at present, especially, with regard to the risk of intestinal perforations [7]. One problem with all thermal laser applications is the lack of suitable online monitoring procedures during the intervention [8,9].…”

“…Treatment strategies as an alternative for palliative surgery for advanced stage rectal cancer include laser ablation, argon plasma coagulation, electrocoagulation, photodynamic therapy, pelvic radiotherapy, chemotherapy, endoscopic stenting, and cryotherapy 7-11. Treatment selection should consider the patient’s symptoms, age, comorbid conditions, extent of disease, and patient preference.…”

“…Rao et al79 reported 11 patients who were offered palliation with endoscopic Nd-YAG laser ablation for rectal carcinoma ( n =8), rectosigmoid tumor ( n =2), and recurrent tubulovillous adenoma ( n =1). The number of treatment episodes varied from 1 to 12, and the symptom-free interval was 2 to 18 months between treatment episodes.…”
