Endoscopic intranasal findings in unilateral primary acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction

Abstract: Unilateral PANDO has a higher incidence of ipsilaterally deviated nasal septum. This association is significant. Routine nasal endoscopic examination should be performed in cases undergoing dacryocystorhinostomy to better plan a concomitant septoplasty if needed.

“…The indication for septoplasty is chronic nasal airway obstruction. Interestingly DNS is more common among patients with primary acquired NLDO (60% vs. 36% in a control group [11]), and it corresponds in laterality to the side of the obstruction in about 90% of the cases [11,12]. The reported rate of concomitant endoDCR and septoplasty for DNS is considerable, and ranges from 11.9 to 57%.…”

“…The reported rate of concomitant EDCR and septoplasty ranges from 11.9 to 57% [11,[24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31]. Per the literature, 39.7% of our cases were managed with a combined procedure.…”

“…For example, a relationship was shown between the development of nasolacrimal duct obstruction and deviation of the nasal septum, impaired ventilation of the ethmoid sinuses, presence of concha bullosa , and changes in the ostiomeatal complex. 9 10 11 However, the state of the mucous membrane of the nasal cavity and its sinuses has not been studied carefully. It seems to us unlikely that several pathological conditions associated with a changed volume of the nasal cavity, in particular, deviation of nasal septum and presence of concha bullosa , can cause and maintain the inflammatory process in nasolacrimal ducts.…”
