Characteristics and outcome of surgically treated pituitary tumours in South Africa: a single‐centre experience

“…In our study, complete resection was achieved in only nine patients (12·8%). This is in contrast to reports from other centres which report higher rates of complete resection (38–66·7%) . The low resection rate in this study is probably accounted for by the high proportion of macroadenomas, invasiveness of the tumours and late presentation.…”

Only 10% initially had trans-cranial surgery, and 8Á6% needed to undergo both approaches.…”

CSF leak (10%), nasal bleeding (5·7%), meningitis (4·3%), cranial nerve palsies (4·3%) and hemiplegia (2·9%) is also comparable with rates from other centres; however, in a report on 570 patients with NFPA by Berker et al ., the overall complication rate was 12·1%, with low rates of postoperative CSF leak (0·8%), meningitis (0·8%), permanent DI (0·4%) and no deaths. We found a higher rate of postoperative hydrocephalus (7·1%) than that reported by others (1·4–6%) .…”

“…En los pacientes en los que persisten elevados los niveles de IGF-1 y sin evidencia de lesión residual en la RM de control puede haber mejoría y normalización de los niveles de IGF de forma tardía hasta en un 59% de los casos a los 3 meses y en un 24% más entre los 12 y 57 meses posteriores a la cirugía 16,17 . En nuestra serie, el 85% de los casos presentaron normalización de los niveles de IGF-1 y GH en el seguimiento postoperatorio.…”
