Endoscopic‐assisted Adenoidectomy

Abstract: Adenoidectomy is a commonly performed procedure. The advent of endoscopic sinus surgery has popularized the use of endoscopes. Endoscopic-assisted adenoidectomy (EAA) is a natural progression of this technology to allow a more complete adenoidectomy. Two hundred thirty-six patients undergoing adenoidectomy were evaluated with an endoscopic technique. A routine transoral adenoidectomy was performed first. Then a 4-mm 0 degrees telescope was used transnasally, and residual adenoid tissue was removed from the ant… Show more

“…Though conventional adenoidectomy is a quick and a simple procedure but it is a crude and a blind procedure too. Besides known complications such as injury to eustachian tube orifice and pharyngeal musculature, Canon et al [1,9] and Havas et al [10] have drawn attention to the high percentage of residual tissue remaining after this procedure. This residual tissue can lead to a combination of potential problems, including peritubaric obstruction, bacterial reservoirs and hyperplasia of the remnants with the persistence of obstructive symptoms; all these aspects highlight the importance of addressing a complete removal of the adenoid tissue.…”

“…Canon et al popularized endoscopic assisted adenoidectomy (EAA) calling it "a natural progression of endoscopic technology to allow a more complete adenoidectomy". 1 They followed a conventional transoral adenoidectomy with endoscopic removal of residual adenoids. Microdebriders are powered instruments which provide an excellent, safe and thorough technique in endoscopic nasal surgery.…”
