Endophytic Streptomyces sp. AC35, a producer of bioactive isoflavone aglycones and antimycins

Abstract: In this research, a microbial endophytic strain obtained from the rhizosphere of the conifer Taxus baccata and designated as Streptomyces sp. AC35 (FJ001754.1 Streptomyces, GenBank) was investigated. High 16S rDNA gene sequence similarity suggests that this strain is closely related to S. odorifer. The major fatty acid profile of intracellular lipids was also carried out to further identify this strain. Atomic force microscopy and scanning acoustic microscopy were used to image our strain. Its major excreted s… Show more

“…Finally, various other compounds were tentatively identified within the extracts. The most abundant were the isoflavones daidzein [37], genistein [38] and glycitein [39] that have antioxidant, anticancer and antimicrobial properties [37,40] and several more metabolites with antibiotic properties, such as 21-demethyl-leptomycin A [41], that could explain the differences observed between the antimicrobial activity and the production levels of phocoenamicins in some of the extracts. The wide and diverse metabolic profile of these strains highlights their therapeutic potential and the need for further investigation.…”

“…Streptomyces sp. AC35, a producer of bioactive isoflavone aglycones and antimycins, was isolated from T. baccata rhizosphere . In the present study, we for the first time showed that the high throughput metagenomic sequencing is powerful in revealing the microbial diversity of Taxus rhizosphere.…”

“…It was found that compounds 1 and 2 were isoflavone derivatives, which are reported for the first time in this bacterium. However, numerous isoflavone derivatives were previously identified in several Streptomyces species [ 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 ]. The identity of daidzein ( 1 ) and genistein ( 2 ) was confirmed by matching with spectroscopic data in the literature [ 23 ].…”
