Fungos do gênero Guignardia são frequentemente isolados em diferentes espécies de plantas, sendo muitas vezes caracterizados como fungos endofíticos. Entretanto, algumas espécies deste fungo, a exemplo de G. citricarpa e G. psidii, são causadores de importantes doenças que afetam culturas agrícolas, como a Mancha-Preta dos Citros (MPC) e a podridão dos frutos de goiabeira, respectivamente. Também são apontados como causadores de manchas foliares em diferentes espécies de frutíferas e também em outras culturas. Este trabalho teve o objetivo de isolar, identificar e caracterizar a diversidade genética existente entre isolados de Guignardia oriundos de citros, mangueira, goiabeira, eucaliptos, jabuticabeira e pitangueira através da análise da sequência de DNA do cístron ITS1-5,8-S-ITS2. Verificou-se que os isolados obtidos pertencem às espécies G. citricarpa e G. mangiferae. Entretanto, dois grupos encontrados em mangueira não puderam ser identificados em nível de espécie com base em sua sequência de DNA em função da baixa similaridade com as sequências de diferentes espécies de Guignardia já depositadas em banco de dados. Desta forma, goiabeira, eucaliptos, jabuticabeira e pitangueira são hospedeiras de G. mangiferae, enquanto os citros hospedam duas formas, G. citricarpa e G. mangiferae. Já a mangueira é hospedeira de G. mangiferae e de dois outros grupos ainda não identificados. Verificou-se ainda que isolados de Guignardia obtidos de sintomas de podridão de fruto de goiabeira foram identificados como G. mangiferae.

Forty-four endophytes were isolated from Zingiber cassumunar and identified morphologically. The ethyl acetate extracts of all endophytes were obtained. The ethyl acetate extracts were subjected to study antibacterial and antioxidant activities. The ethyl acetate extract of the Arthrinium sp. MFLUCC16-1053 showed activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Specifically, the minimum inhibition concentration against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli was 31.25 and 7.81 µg/mL, respectively. In addition, the crude extract showed highest antioxidant activity in 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl scavenging at IC50 value of 28.47 µg/mL. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis revealed that the extract of the Arthrinium sp. MFLUCC16-1053 contains various antibacterial and antioxidant compounds which are β-cyclocitral, 3E-cembrene A, laurenan-2-one, sclareol, 2Z,6E-farnesol, cembrene, β-isocomene and γ-curcumene. The fungus Arthrinium sp. MFLUCC16-1053 was also identified by molecular and phylogenetic methods.

Endophytes, microorganisms that colonize internal tissues of all plant species, create a huge biodiversity with yet unknown novel natural products, presumed to push forward the frontiers of drug discovery. Next to the clinically acknowledged antineoplastic agent, paclitaxel, endophyte research has yielded potential drug lead compounds with antibacterial, antiviral, antioxidant, insulin mimetic, anti-neurodegenerative and immunosuppressant properties. Furthermore, while being implicated in livestock neurotoxicosis, some endophyte-produced alkaloids have been shown to display insecticidal activity. The endophyte-host relationship is postulated to be a 'balanced antagonism'. Moreover, the plausibility of horizontal gene transfer (HGT) hypothesis is taken into account. Knowledge of the genetic background of endophytic natural product biosynthesis is discussed on the basis of loline alkaloids, ergopeptines, lolitrems and maytansinoids. The current dynamic progress in genomics will contribute to a better understanding of endophytic microbes and to further exploiting them as a source of pharmaceutically relevant compounds.
