Endoparasites of <i>Trachurus picturatus</i> (Pisces: Carangidae) from the Madeira and Canary Islands: Selecting parasites for use as tags

Abstract: SUMMARY:In order to evaluate the use of parasites as biological tags to identify populations of the oceanic horse mackerel, Trachurus picturatus, two samples of 100 fish each, caught off the Madeira and Canary Islands from January to June 2009, were examined for the presence of anisakids, trypanorhynchs, acanthocephalans and liver coccidians. In T. picturatus from Madeira, prevalence of the coccidian Goussia cruciata reached 82%, whereas prevalence of the nematode Anisakis sp., the acanthocephalan Rhadinorhync… Show more

“…Interestingly, some studies on reproduction and growth from Madeira (Jesus 4 ; Vasconcelos et al, 2006;Vasconcelos et al, 2017b), Azores (Isidro, 1990;Garcia et al, 2015) (Gaevskaya and Kovaleva, 1985;Costa et al, 2013;Vasconcelos et al, 2017a) and it may be that variation in the occurrence and infection levels of parasites may reflect the existence of different populations of T. picturatus in the northeast Atlantic. The goal for this study was to provide a first step toward the identification of geographical variation in blue jack mackerel body and otolith shape by using landmark-based geometric morphometrics and elliptic Fourier analysis, respectively, to determine whether variation in these parameters may have implications for fishery management.…”

“…G. cruciata is a species that is morphologically similar to G. clupearum, though G. cruciata has been cited as a liver-specific parasite of marine fish species of the genus Trachurus Rafinesque, 1810 (Lom and Dyková 1992;Abollo et al 2001;Braicovich et al 2012;Costa et al 2013).…”

“…The coccidian G. cruciata (Lom and Dyková 1992;Abollo et al 2001;Braicovich et al 2012;Costa et al 2013) has been reported to infect species inhabiting the Atlantic Ocean, such as Trachurus picturatus (Bowditch), Trachurus lathami Nichols and Trachurus trachurus (Linnaeus), and the Mediterranean Sea, such as Trachurus mediterraneus (Steindachner). G. clupearum has also been described as parasitising the liver of T. trachurus (Gestal and Azevedo 2006).…”
