Endoparasites in dogs and cats in Germany 1999 ? 2002

Abstract: Infections with endoparasites in dogs and cats have been determined by analysing the results of faecal examinations (Flotation, MIFC, sedimentation, Baermann, smear, ProSpecT Giardia Microplate Assay). Samples of 8438 dogs and 3167 cats from the years 1999 until 2002 have been included in the investigation. 2717 dogs (32.2%) and 771 cats (24.3%) have been infected with endoparasites. In the infected dogs the following parasites have been identified: Class Nematodea: Toxocara canis: 22.4%, Toxascaris leonina: 1… Show more

“…This finding is also consistent with studies of domestic dogs where Cystoisospora and Giardia infections were most prevalent in pups (Barutzki & Schaper, 2003; Bugg, Robertson, Elliot, & Thompson, 1999). In wild canids, comparable indications of age‐related parasite burden have previously only been reported in helminth etiopathology (Guberti, Stancampiano, & Francisci, 1993; Lesniak, Heckmann et al., 2017; Veronesi et al., 2014; Webster et al., 2017).…”

“…It appears to be rarer in dogs. The fi rst report in a domestic dog occurred in Great Britain (Cobb & Fisher, 1992), followed by a few cases in Ireland (Reilly et al, 2000), Switzerland (Unterer et al, 2002) and Germany (Barutzki & Schaper, 2003). The prevalence in dogs found in this study is slightly lower than the values found in Germany (0.9 % of 8438 dogs examined, Barutzki & Schaper, 2003; 2.4 % of 958 dogs Taubert et al, 2009) and in Denmark (1.4 % of 4151 dogs Taubert et al, 2009 ).…”
