Endometrioid adenocarcinoma of the ovary: MRI findings with emphasis on diffusion-weighted imaging for the differentiation of ovarian tumors

Abstract: DWI with ADC measurement could indicate the presence of endometrioid adenocarcinomas due to a slightly but significantly lower ADC values compared to other malignant ovarian lesions. Thus, DWI is beneficial and should be part of a standard protocol for the evaluation of indeterminate adnexal lesions.

“…After full-text examinations of the remaining 153 articles, 137 were further excluded. Finally, 16 articles (1113,1628) were eligible for inclusion in the systematic review. For discrimination between malignant and benign lesions, ten articles (11,12,16–23) including 722 malignant tumors and 298 benign tumors in total were found in the literature.…”

For differentiating borderline tumors and malignant tumors, six studies (13,2428) were eligible for meta-analysis, including 144 borderline tumors and 229 malignant tumors.…”

“…Since the majority of ovarian cancers have a similar morphological appearance on conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), more advanced diagnostic technology is necessary to improve the differential diagnosis . Depending on the microscopic motion of water molecules, diffusion‐weighted imaging (DWI) can provide additional information.…”

“…Spearman’s correlation was used to analyze the correlation between the change rates of DWI and DKI parameters and change rates of the tumor size, necrosis, apoptosis, Ki-67 and Bcl-2. The results were interpreted according to the degree of association as strong (1 ≥ r ≥ 0.75), moderate (0.75 > r ≥ 0.50), low (0.50 > r ≥ 0.25), or not relevant (r < 0.25) after taking significant correlation ( p < 0.01 or p < 0.05) values into consideration [ 19 21 ]. A p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.…”
