Endometrial and Menstrual Blood Mesenchymal Stem/Stromal Cells: Biological Properties and Clinical Application

Abstract: Bozorgmehr et al. Endometrial and Menstrual Blood MSC and MenSC to ensure these protocols produce cell products free from tumorigenicity and toxicity. Although a wealth of data on the biological properties of eMSC and MenSC has recently been published, it will be important to address their mechanism of action in preclinical models of human disease.

“…Notably, these marker genes are upregulated within 1 week of culturing in A83-01-containing medium ( Gurung et al, 2018b ). Currently, SUSD2 is the most sensitive marker to distinguish eMSC from endometrial fibroblasts with the level of expression correlating to the abundance of highly proliferative and clonogenic eMSC in culture ( Murakami et al, 2014 ; Gurung et al, 2015 ; Bozorgmehr et al, 2020 ).…”

“…eMSC further express MSCA-1 ( Sobiesiak et al, 2010 ). These markers identify eMSC as pericytes and perivascular cells of endometrial spiral arterioles, arterioles and venules ( Gargett and Masuda, 2010 ; Murakami et al, 2014 ; Lucas et al, 2016 ; Bozorgmehr et al, 2020 ). A major advantage of the endometrium over other sources of adult MSC, such as bone marrow or adipose tissue, is its accessibility.…”

“…(1) To receive the biological samples of endometrial tissue. This non-invasive and non-traumatic procedure can be realized simply by collection of the desquamated endometrium, contained in menstrual blood (Zemelko et al, 2012 ; Bozorgmehr et al, 2020 ). (2) Pieces of endometrium are plated on the Petri dishes and (3) patient-specific ESC lines can be easily obtained due to adhesive properties of these cells.…”

“…These tissues are easily harvested with minimal discomfort to patients and without anaesthesia, which is required for bone marrow and adipose tissue. Due to the ease of tissue procurement, MSCs from the endometrium, placenta and menstrual blood are actively being developed for clinical use and have been assessed for their reparative properties in preclinical animal models for a range of clinical conditions [ 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 ].…”
