Endogenous Endophthalmitis Caused by Salmonella Serotype B in an Immunocompetent 12-Year-Old Child

Abstract: clearly defined and thus easier to detect. Clearly laser has its deficiencies, but we are concerned that the dramatic early effects of bevacizumab may lead to an underappreciation of its own limitations. We believe treatment success can be considered final not after the early response but only after there is complete retinal vascularization. This case and others that will likely follow should allow a more complete and balanced perspective. In our experience, laser after bevacizumab treatment seems to reduce se… Show more

“…Studies suggest that EE accounts for 2 to 8% of all endophthalmitis. 1,2 A review of EE in 2003 showed that underlying medical conditions predisposed to ocular infection in 56 to 68% of cases including recent hospitalization, diabetes mellitus, urinary tract infection, immunosuppression (associated with underlying malignancy, neutropenia, and HIV (human immunodeficiency virus)), intravenous drug abuse (IVDA), and indwelling catheters. 3,4 In another study in 2012, 90.9% of patients reported a pre-existing condition of which diabetes mellitus was the most common (50%).…”

“…Studies have shown that endogenous endophthalmitis accounts for 2% to 8% of all endophthalmitis cases[1,2]. It is even rarer in children, and constitutes only 0.1% to 4% of all endogenous endophthalmitis cases[2,3]. In children it may masquerade as uveitis, pre septal orbital cellulitis, congenital glaucoma, conjunctivitis or retinoblastoma.…”

“…Hersing and Duke-Elders [1] reported typhoid-related uveal complications including iritis, retinal hemorrhage, choroiditis, endophthalmitis and panophthalmitis. Our group published [2],[3] late-onset endogenous endophthalmitis post typhoid fever resolution. In this manuscript we report a patient who presented with retinitis and had a history of typhoid fever, beginning 6 weeks prior to presentation.…”
