Endocrine Society of India management guidelines for patients with thyroid nodules: A position statement

“…A female preponderance was noted in our study with 338 (82.62%) cases. Similar female preponderance was noted by Unnikrishnan et al 9 As reported by Tsegaye et al 85.7% per cent of the thyroid diseases were found in the age group 20-59 years. 10 In present study, 71.51% cases were in the similar age group.…”

“…Multi-nodular goiter (MNG) is one of the commonest thyroid gland disease [1] which sometimes presents with shortness of breath and dysphasia due to compression of the trachea and esophagus, as well as obstruction of venous flow in the head and neck. Surgery is an important treatment option in the presence of indications (compressive symptoms, high suspicion of malignancy, hyperthyroidism, cosmetic preference, etc.)…”

“…There are several alternative procedures for thyroid gland operation such as subtotal thyroidectomy (STT), neartotal thyroidectomy (NTT), hemi-thyroidectomy plus subtotal resection (Dunhill procedure), and total thyroidectomy (TT). But the surgical procedure of choice is still under discussion [1][2][3]. There are some studies which prefer TT method because of the lower incidence of goiter recurrence and less frequent need for completion thyroidectomy, especially when there is a bilateral gland involvement posterior to middle thyroid veins [4,5].…”

“…Using ultrasonography, in an area with borderline iodine deficiency, MNG is found in approximate 23% of the general population [2]. Medical care or radioactive iodine may use for larger goiters, but the best choice of MNG treatment is surgery, especially in cosmetic problem, compressive symptom, toxicity and suspicion of malignancy [3]. There are several methods for thyroid gland operation such as subtotal thyroidectomy (STT), near-total thyroidectomy (NTT), hemi-thyroidectomy plus subtotal resection (Dunhill procedure) and total thyroidectomy (TT).…”

But the surgical method of benign thyroid disease treatment is still controversial [3,4].…”
