Endocrine responses to insulin hypoglycaemia in the young calf.

Abstract: SUNMBRY1. Variations in the output of glucocorticoids and catecholamines from the right adrenal gland, in response to insulin hypoglyeaemia, have been investigated in calves 2-5 weeks after birth. These have been correlated with changes in the concentration of glucocorticoids and glucagon in arterial plasma.2. Moderate hypoglycaemia for a limited period (0.1 u. insulin/kg), elicited a prompt increase in steroid output from the adrenal gland followed by a significant rise in plasma glucagon concentration. By co… Show more

“…However, in this species, adrenergic mechanisms such as release of adrenaline from the adrenal medulla, activation of hepatic glycogenolysis and inhibition of endogenous insulin release can be excluded. The amounts of adrenaline released under these conditions is physiologically insignificant (Bloom, Edwards, Hardy, Malinowska & Silver, 1975), nor is the hypoglycaemic response to this small dose of insulin significantly changed after section of both splanchnic nerves (Bloom et al 1974).…”

“…Adrenal venous blood samples were analysed for cortisol and corticosterone, as above, and also for adrenaline and noradrenaline by a modification of Euler & Flooding's trihydroxyindole method (Euler & Floding, 1955) as previously described (Bloom et al 1975).…”

“…kg-1 min'. It is therefore possible to conclude that the limiting factor to steroid release under these conditions operates at pituitary or hypothalamic level rather than in the adrenal cortex itself (Hardy, Silver, Addison, Malinowska & Edwards, 1974;Bloom, Edwards, Hardy, Malinowska & Silver, 1975). …”
