Endocrine Parameters in Amenorrheic and Eumenorrheic Adolescent Female Runners

Abstract: The purpose of the present study was to compare endocrine parameters reflecting reproductive function and metabolism in ten amenorrheic (AR) and eumenorrheic (ER) adolescent female runners and seven untrained controls (SE). Additionally, responses to diagnostic criteria for eating disorders (DSM-III) were compared among groups. AR ran more miles/day and consumed fewer kcal/d to support energy expenditure compared to ER (p < 0.05). Mean levels of fasting plasma estradiol, luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulati… Show more

“…Similar findings were reported by Kaiserauer et al (1989) although the intake of eumenorrhoeic sedentary controls was very similar to that of the amenorrhoeic women. Baer (1993) also found lower intakes (P < 0.05) in amenorrhoeic runners compared to both eumenorrhoeic runners and controls (1627 (SD 7 9 , 1944 ( s~4 5 ) , 1950 (SD 56) kcal d-l respectively). And in adolescent dancers, Hergenroeder et al (1991) estimated intakes of 1405 and 11 16 kcal d-' (P = 0-03) in eumenorrhoeic and amenorrhoeic subjects respectively using a 24-h recall and food frequency form.…”
