Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals: Human Exposure and Health Risks

Abstract: Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have been emphasized due to their threats in fertility, intelligence, and survival. For the last decade, many researchers have investigated EDC-health outcome. However, EDC responses in human were not clearly clarified through experimental and epidemiological data. Therefore, considering particular status of EDC endpoints, we suggest that one of the best ways to prevent unknown health risks from EDCs is to perform exposure monitoring or to do surveillance for EDC release i… Show more

“…Besides the favourable effects that sport supplements may have on body composition, the potential ED substances present in these products may also have undesirable effects. The list of detrimental effects they may cause in humans and their progeny is described in many reviews and clinical studies providing links with infertility, heart problems and different types of carcinoma [8,[30][31][32]. Furthermore, of concern is that this study obtained a positive hormonal response in more then 70% of the tested products.…”

“…EDCs are linked to birth defects, decreased fertility, unbalanced sex hormones, defects of the immune system, and neuronal adverse effects 1, 2, 3. The most investigated endocrine disruptor, diethylstilbestrol (DES), is a synthetic nonsteroidal estrogen used in the United States and Europe from the mid‐1940s to the 1970s for the prevention of spontaneous abortion and premature delivery.…”

“…Most studies on adverse health effects of environmental contaminants have focused mainly on agricultural or industrial pesticides [2], heavy metals [3], and toxic industrial wastes and residues [2]. One large class of chemicals that has received little attention in this context comprises residues of pharmaceutical products (PPs), which are used in human and veterinary medicine in quantities comparable to those of the agrochemicals.…”
