Endocrine and testicular changes induced by olanzapine in adult Wistar rats

Abstract: Olanzapine is an atypical antipsychotic drug that has been increasingly used in acute treatment of, and therapeutic support for, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and other psychoses. Considering that olanzapine acts on the dopaminergic receptor and this receptor is detected in germ cells, the present study aims to investigate the effects of treatment with different doses of olanzapine on spermatogenesis, plasma testosterone and weight of androgen-dependent organs in rats. Results showed reduced plasma testoster… Show more

“…In this study there was high significant decrease in testicular weight of both aripiprazole and olanzapine treated groups in comparison to the control group, www.fhc.viamedica.pl indicating their adverse effect on male reproductive function. Bringel et al [10] revealed similar decrease in testicular weight of olanzapine treated rats. They attributed this to the decrease of the plasma testosterone detected in this group.…”

“…Others observed a reduction in plasma levels of testosterone in rats treated with olanzapine [10]. Several studies have shown the importance of testosterone and FSH to the qualitative and quantitative maintenance of spermatogenesis [31,32].…”

“…It is also a useful indicator of testicular damages, which can provide information on toxicity and on target sites including target cell, show the extend of toxicity and indicate the potential of recovery from the effects of toxicity [28]. Sections taken from the testes of S. myosotiflora treated rats showed no gross abnormalities at all doses.…”
