Endobronchial lipoma, an extremely rare benign tumour of the lung, mimicking asthma bronchiale

Abstract: Endobronchial lipomas are extremely rare benign tumours of the lung. Their clinical presentation mimics that of obstructive lung diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), leading to a delay in diagnosis and errors in treatment. Therefore, making precise diagnosis may be challenging. We report a case of a 63-year-old man with paroxysmal attacks of dyspnea, non-productive cough, and wheezing, initially suspect for adult onset asthma, but with a final diagnosis of endobronchial lip… Show more

“…This type ofwheeze is usually caused by high-velocity airflow through narrow airways. Common causes are intraluminal obstruction by a tumour, secretions, foreign bodies, and external compression to the airway [4][5][6].In this case, the wheeze was heard only on inspiration. Such wheezing is caused by dilatation of the obstructed airway and a partial increase of the air flow velocity on inspiration.…”

“…Endobronchial lipomas, which are rare benign tumors of the lung, can likewise present with asthma-like wheezing. 14 In addition, endobronchial tuberculosis presenting as a polypoid, necrotic endobronchial lesion has been reported to produce symptoms mimicking asthma. 15 …”
