“…An NDE can be defined as a subjectively profound psychological experience, which deviates from currently accepted norms of reality, due to the transcendence of space, time and perceptual boundaries (Tassell-Matamua, 2014;van Lommel, 2013). Cognitive, emotional and transcendental elements comprise NDEs.…”

“…The instruments used in the collection of qualitative data were recorded semistructured interviews and graphical representations, prior to the 1st and after the 3rd RIME sessions. The main theoretical frameworks used for the development of the RIME were Analytical Psychology (Jung, 1967(Jung, , 1968a(Jung, , 1968b(Jung, , 1969(Jung, , 1972 and Near Death Experiences (Fenwick, 2013;Greyson, 2007;Trent-Von & Beauregard, 2013;van Lommel, 2004van Lommel, , 2013van Lommel, Wees, Meyers, & Elfferich, 2001).…”

“…Although most IANDS researchers exercise some restraint, others make the connection explicit in claiming that NDEs confirm nonlocal consciousness and the notion of an afterlife (see, e.g., Parnia and Fenwick , 6; Fox , 342; Greyson, Kelly, and Kelly ; Beauregard , 179–181; Van Lommel , 22–4; Greyson , 781). Survivalism surfaces not in the explicit statement of such claims but rather in subtle ways it is present in the nested assumptions that NDEs are a unitary entity with a single explanation.…”

“…The generic definition of NDEs together with the notion of NDEs as a single unitary entity is complimented by the search for a single explanation that can account for all aspects of NDEs (see Mitchell‐Yellin and Fischer , 174–6 for a discussion of this tendency). This is based on the common practice in IANDS circles to point out that other explanations, notably materialist or physicalist (neuroscientific and psychological) explanations, cannot account for every feature of the core NDEs and consequently the survivalist hypothesis remains alive (see, e.g., Agrillo , 5–6; Greyson , 472–474; Van Lommel , 22–25) . One example will suffice.…”
