Endemic skeletal fluorosis

Abstract: . Endemic skeletal fluorosis. Endemic skeletal fluorosis is described in 6 children aged 11 or over. Four cases were crippled with severe deformities in the spine, hips, and knees. All showed positive phosphorus, magnesium, and nitrogen balances and excessively positive calcium balances. The skeletal x-rays, histology, and chemical composition of the bones revealed diagnostic changes in each case.Endemic fluorosis as manifested by mottled dental enamel and by diffuse osteosclerosis of the skeleton was first de… Show more

“…Though skeletal fluorosis in adults has been observed in many parts of India, and from other areas such as South Africa, China and the Persian Gulf, reports of skeletal fluorosis in children are few (Teotia et al, 1971). Teotia et al (1971) reported six cases of skeletal fluorosis in children aged 6-14 years, resident in high fluoride areas (10.35-13.5 j.lg F/rnl).…”

“…Skeletal pathologies include abnormal bone formations on the appendicular or axial skeleton, mostly linked with the insertions of tendons and ligaments [11]. In clinically diagnosed cases of fluorosis in children, skeletal manifestations included osteopenia, growth lines, and sclerosis [105][106][107]. Considering that there is no widespread dental staining nor skeletal lesions relating to fluorosis, it is unlikely that B70 suffered from fluorosis.…”

“…Cohen et al [40] have suggested that the magnesium malabsorption found in 12 of 20 of their osteoporotic patients may account for this magnesium deficiency state [40], Lowered bone magnesium content has been reported in diabetes [32,36] and in otosclerotic bone [41]. Increased magnesium levels have been reported in human fluorotic bone [42,43] and in quail [44] and chick [45,46] studies. However, when fluoride-supplemented animals are placed on a low-magnesium diet, bone magnesium de creased [47], Early work by Pellegrino and Biltz [48] showed no difference in magnesium content between control sub jects and patients with renal disease of less than 2 or more than 2 years.…”
