End-to-End Quality of Service Over Heterogeneous Networks

Abstract: The EuQoS (End-to-End QoS over Heterogeneous Networks) IST Integrated European Project aimed to define a Next Generation Network architecture that builds, uses and manages end-to-end QoS across different administrative domains and heterogeneous networks (UMTS, xDSL, Ethernet, WiFi, Satellite and IP/ MPLS). The EuQoS architecture preserves the openness and the decentralized decision model of the actual Internet, runs on off-the-shelf hardware and network equipment, and allows end users to request various servic… Show more

“…Virtual Path Slicing (VPS) is a method that has evolved from studies like [12] on how to implement end to end QoS in packet networks. RedZinc has implemented a VPS engine that can steer traffic on the edge of the network based on the request of the application and coordinate this traffic steering with other autonomous systems.…”

“…Our experiment is based on an control plane stack consisting of: (i) a Virtual Path Slice (VPS) engine [2] which manages concatenating bandwidth slices in multiple autonomous systems, (ii) FloodLight [3] which is an openflow controller, (iii) RouteFlow [4] which is a mechanism to integrate interdomain BGP forwarding advertisements from adjacent autonomous systems into OpenFlow rules, (iv) QueuePusher which is a mechanism for installing queues on an Open vSwitch [5] (v) OpenvSwitch, which is an OpenFlow softswitch. We stimulate the control plane stack with high volume of requests from a test harness which functions as a pulse generator sending requests to the northbound API of the VPS engine.…”

“…Examples include One-Way Delay (OWD) at the network level, blocking probability at the call level, and perceptual quality evaluation at the user level. 19 In this module, students evaluate their implementation using the Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality (PESQ) 22 Mean Opinion Score (MOS) and various latency measurements.…”
