In developing countries where comprehensive policies addressing the environmental impact of ELV have been implemented, this mixed-methods study examines the complex relationship between knowledge and social acceptance of ELV policies in developing countries. The study integrates a quantitative survey with 150 participants and a qualitative phase featuring indepth interviews with 15 individuals. The quantitative survey explores participants' understanding and acceptance of various aspects of ELV policies, revealing diverse knowledge levels on environmental, economic, public health, safety, and technological dimensions. Notably, there is a solid willingness to comply with these policies, highlighting their perceived importance in safeguarding environmental and public health. The qualitative phase delves deeper, uncovering factors influencing social acceptance, such as limited awareness, positive attitudes, and considerations related to economic, safety, and health concerns. This study emphasizes the critical role of knowledge in shaping the social acceptance of ELV policies, demonstrating that an informed public is more inclined to have favorable attitudes and greater acceptance. By blending quantitative and qualitative insights, we obtain a holistic understanding of the interplay between knowledge and social acceptance concerning ELV policies. This comprehensive perspective is invaluable for policymakers and stakeholders, underscoring the necessity of well-informed strategies to boost public comprehension and acceptance of ELV policies. The findings indicate that effective communication and education initiatives could significantly enhance the implementation and effectiveness of ELV policies in developed nations, suggesting a pivotal role for targeted educational and awareness campaigns in achieving policy goals.

Addressing the critical environmental challenge of end-of-life vehicle (ELV) management in Indonesia’s transportation industry, this study investigates the complex interplay between societal factors and technical adoption. We use a comprehensive survey and path analysis to investigate the relationships between demographic characteristics (gender, age, income and education) and ELV acceptance, revealing complex preferences and concerns across several population groups. Comparative analyses with previous research reveal gender-specific inequities and age-related problems, emphasizing the importance of customized measures. Our findings indicate that environmental concerns exhibit a significant positive relationship with community acceptance (path coefficient = 0.426, p < 0.001). Moreover, technological familiarity (path coefficient = 0.352, p < 0.001) and infrastructure availability (path coefficient = 0.518, p < 0.001) demonstrate noteworthy positive associations, emphasizing the role of knowledge and accessible infrastructure in promoting acceptance. Conversely, the cost of adoption exhibits a negative relationship with societal acceptance (path coefficient = −0.269, p < 0.001), suggesting potential challenges that must be addressed. Mediation analysis uncovers the mediating roles of information exposure, perceived safety, as well as convenience and accessibility. Total effects analysis validates the collective influence of crucial factors while acknowledging the potential hindrance posed by the cost of adoption. Our findings contribute to inclusive policies and initiatives for sustainable ELV practices, offering insights to address a critical environmental issue in Indonesia. Although acknowledging limitations in scope and methodology, our research advances the discourse on sustainable transportation transitions and guides strategies to promote responsible ELV management in pursuing a greener and more socially equitable future.

In the face of global environmental challenges, Malaysia, like many nations, is seeking to improve its environmental sustainability, and understanding how demographic factors influence individuals’ perceptions, attitudes, and readiness toward End-of-life Vehicle (ELV) management practices is crucial for developing effective policies and interventions. This study, which involved 630 participants of various age groups and employment backgrounds, examines the relationship between demographics and environmental awareness and readiness with a specific focus on the management of ELV. Significant findings reveal that younger individuals, particularly those aged 18 years, are actively engaged in environmental concerns, and the gender distribution is nearly equal, emphasizing a shared interest in ELV practices among men and females. Malays constitute the majority ethnic group, underlining the need for culturally sensitive and inclusive policies, and government employees exhibit greater knowledge about ELVs, while education levels positively correlate with awareness of ELVs. Positive attitudes are predominantly observed among private sector workers and government employees, with semi-government employees demonstrating the highest readiness for ELV initiatives, while the unemployed exhibit the lowest readiness. This research underscores the importance of demographic factors in shaping attitudes, knowledge and readiness concerning ELV management practices in Malaysia, highlighting the need for targeted strategies and interventions tailored to specific demographic groups, which are crucial for policy development and the promotion of sustainable practices, contributing to global environmental conservation efforts.
