Encouraging contributions in learning networks using incentive mechanisms

Abstract: We investigate incentive mechanisms to increase active participation in Learning Networks. The Learning Network under study is LN4LD, a Learning Network for the exchange of information about the IMS Learning Design specification. We examine how to encourage learners in LN4LD to contribute their knowledge, and whether incentive mechanisms can increase the level of active participation. We describe an incentive mechanism based on constructivist principles and Social Exchange Theory, and experimentation using the … Show more

“…Soft rewards are defined as individuals expectations of achieving implicit outcomes (e.g., personal reputation and relationships with significant others) in return for performing knowledge transfer behaviour [18], [41], [42]. In addition, soft rewards may make individuals feel implicitly controlled or pressured to perform the behaviour due to the implicit consequences related to the behaviour, and are thus forms of interjected regulations/moderately controlled motivations [43], [44].…”

“…Such learning networks expand learning experiences and choice, but require considerable commitment from learners who must actively acquire and contribute knowledge. Researchers recently expressed disappointment at low participation rates and noted evidence of lurking in studied networks (Hummel et al, 2005). …”

“…The importance of member contribution for the sustainable development of online communities has been verified by extensive research [16][17][18]21]. Establishing an effective incentive mechanism is one of the most common ways to maintain community contribution behavior [22][23][24][25][26]. Despite the fact that OHC of practice has been in existence around the world over a decade, very little is known about incentive mechanisms that could foster physicians' willingness to contribute and interact with patients in the OHC.…”
