Encoding music performance data in Humdrum and MEI

Abstract: This paper presents a new method of encoding performance data in MEI using the recently added element. Performance data was extracted using the Automatic Music Performance Analysis and Comparison Toolkit (AMPACT) and encoded as a JSON object within an element linked to a specific musical note. A set of pop music vocals has was encoded to demonstrate both the range of descriptors that can be encoded in and how AMPACT can be used for extracting performance data in the absence of a … Show more

“…Regardless of song creation, music editing, or MIR application, NuText plays an auxiliary role and does not replace the current format. Compared with the existing note-level encoding methods [27][28][29][30], NuText is more intuitive and can be directly equivalent to numbered musical notation. In addition to social, digital artwork, and NFTs creation, a previous study by Chen et al used music in NuText format to measure the heart rate through a wearable device and adjust the music parameters in real time, con rming the feasibility of generating sports-oriented music [49].…”

“…A proposal for a general and easy-to-use encoding of note alignments is made by Devaney and Gauvin (2019), by extending the musical score (in MEI or Humdrum **kern format) with some performance-related information. A problem that arises from this approach is about encoding efficiency: if we are considering multiple performances of the same score, we would need to make multiple duplicates of the entire musical score.…”

“…An example of explicit linking between score and performance data is the performance data encoding formats used in the Automatic Music Performance Analysis and Comparison Toolkit (AMPACT) (Devaney and Gauvin, 2019). These encoding formats allow for both reconstruction of the musical score and linking with other musical data encoded with the musical score in other datasets.…”
