Encapsulation of Oregano (Origanum onites L.) Essential Oil in β-Cyclodextrin (β-CD): Synthesis and Characterization of the Inclusion Complexes

Abstract: The aim of the present work was to study the encapsulation of Origanum onites L. essential oil (oregano EO) in β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) inclusion complexes (ICs), using the co-precipitation method. The formed β-CD–oregano EO ICs were characterized by diverse methods, such as Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), FT-IR spectroscopy, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). UV-Vis spectroscopy was used … Show more

“…However, there are important limitations on the use of these essential oils in agriculture, resulting in reduced contact with pathogens, and they are susceptible to degradation upon exposure to ultraviolet radiation, high temperatures and oxidation by atmospheric oxygen . The encapsulation of essential oils could be an efficient way to overcome these problems . The present work showed the efficacy of a solid CD/1,8‐cineole inclusion complex against E. ceratoniae larvae and adults.…”

“…Thus, CD possesses a cage-like supramolecular structure with a hydrophobic cavity and hydrophilic external; it is able to form inclusion complexes with a wide variety of hydrophobic guest molecules and consequently improves their solubility. The inclusion compound—CDs outside and the guest molecules inside—is similar to a molecular capsule and may have a slow-release effect [ 17 , 18 , 19 ].…”

“…The TGA thermogram showed two degradation steps that belonged to thermolysis of the ester group with the subsequent evaporation of the carvacrol moiety and oxidation of the aminoacidic portion, respectively (Table 2). These events were detected in DSC (Figure 4c) in the form of large endothermic peaks at 224 • C with ∆H of −397.26 Jg −1 , 248 • C with ∆H of −433.06 Jg −1 , and 241 • C with ∆H = −465.11 Jg −1 for WSCP1, WSCP2, and WSCP3, respectively [47][48][49][50].…”
