A review of the importance, criteria, and classification of slow-release fertilizers, as well as the most used polymers for encapsulation of fertilizers was realized. The technology of slow-release fertilizers is recognized as a new horizon in the field of agriculture, this approach promises to increase the yield and efficiency of crops due to a decrease in loss during the fertilizing process. The central idea in the development of this technology revolves around the encapsulation of fertilizers and the slowing down of their availability by extending the residence time. Of the above, it is important to review some popular techniques used in the development of encapsulation systems, such as: coacervation, emulsion polymerization, extrusion, spray cooling, spray drying, and fluid bed coating. The spray drying method is the most advantageous due to its fast, replicable, and scalable process for the production of dry powders from a fluid material, which is atomized through a nozzle to a medium of drying air at high temperatures. This review is expected to contribute to the accessibility of information about the actual progress on slow-release fertilizers and strategies of encapsulation.
