Enantiomer‐specific measurements of current‐use pesticides in aquatic systems

Abstract: Some current-use pesticides are chiral and have nonsuperimposable mirror images called enantiomers that exhibit identical physical-chemical properties but can behave differently when in contact with other chiral molecules (e.g., regarding degradation and uptake). These differences can result in variations in enantiomer presence in the environment and potentially change the toxicity of pesticide residues. Several current-use chiral pesticides are applied in urban and agricultural areas, with increased potential… Show more

“…Some studies in which the chiral analysis of phenylpyrazoles has been performed using MS are fipronil in tea plants [25], flufipropil in paddy fields [27], as well as these two insecticides in herbal samples [12]. Fipronil has also been analyzed in water and sediment samples by chiral GC using a chiral column containing tert-butyldimethylsilyl-β-CD dissolved in 15% diphenyl and 85% dimethyl polysiloxane (BGB-172 column); and ECD [20,22] and MS/MS as detectors [21].…”

“…In the Tocantins state, agricultural cultivation generally occurs in areas adjacent to aquatic systems (watershed Araguaia-Tocantins). Thus, the aquatic ecosystem can be impacted since the main routes of contamination by xenobiotics, such as metals, in aquatic systems are through runoff, erosion, drift, leaching, and atmospheric deposition [13,14]. Thus, water quality has been influenced by urbanization and modernization, which has brought problems of wastewater disposal and the contamination of surface water, such as lakes [15].…”
