Enamel and Dentin Caries Risk Factors of Adolescents in the Context of the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS): A Longitudinal Study

Abstract: The objective of this study was to identify risk factors for enamel and dentin caries in adolescents. Method: This 1-year longitudinal study was conducted in 2018 and 2019; 13-to 14-year-old adolescents were recruited. The merged International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) was used to identify caries. The relationships between the caries increment and variables were analyzed with a zero-inflated negative binomial (ZINB) regression model. Results: A total of 1,016 participants completed the ass… Show more

“…The intake of beverages and foods containing simple carbohydrates is not recommended between meals [ 38 ], and several studies asserted that snack intake between meals, carried out one or more times a day, increased the risk of dental caries [ 39 ]. The excess energy intake associated with free sugars can determine dental caries, as well as excess body weight, leading to an increased likelihood of overweight and obesity [ 14 ].…”

“…One milliliter of saliva was added to 3 ml of 3.3 mmol HCl within 5 min after collection and then allowed to stand for 20 mins. The final pH of the saliva was evaluated by an electrical pH meter ( Wang et al, 2020b ).…”

“…Caries-related pathway genes, such as those involved in enamel formation, immune responses, saliva secretion, and taste, were identified based on the pathogenesis of caries. The tag SNPs were screened as described in our previous study ( Wang et al, 2020b ). Thus, 23 target SNPs were detected in all study participants ( Table 1 ).…”

“…The outcome of the present analysis is caries increment. This was de ned as the sum of tooth surfaces that had an ICDAS code of 0 (sound tooth surface: no evidence of caries after air drying for 5 seconds) at baseline and had any ICDAS codes from 1 to 6 at 2-year follow up (1= rst visual change in enamel, opacity or discoloration, white or brown, visible at the entrance to the pit or ssure after prolonged air drying; 2= distinct visual change in enamel when wet or dry; 3 = localized enamel breakdown without clinical visual signs of dentinal involvement; 4 = underlying dark shadow from dentine; 5= distinct cavity with visible dentine; 6 = extensive cavity with visible dentine) in both deciduous and permanent dentitions [27]. Caries increment was calculated for each individual child in the sample.…”
