Enacting protocols by commitment concession

Abstract: Commitment protocols formalize interactions among autonomous, heterogeneous agents, leaving the agents' local policies unspecified. This paper studies the problem of agents enacting commitment protocols, which inherently requires that their policies cohere with the given protocols. Specifically, in many important settings, if agents incautiously create and discharge commitments, they can expose themselves to certain risk; conversely, if the agents are (excessively) cautious, a protocol enactment may deadlock. … Show more

“…Besides, we plan to support other normative concepts such as obligations and prohibitions, which are relevant to commitments (Boella & van der Torre, 2004;Craven & Sergot, 2008;Ågotnes, van der Hoek, & Wooldridge, 2010;Criado, Argente, & Botti, 2011). Last but not least integration of ProMoca with the recent work on dynamic protocol creation in open systems is an interesting future work (Yolum & Singh, 2007;Artikis, 2009;Meneguzzi, Telang, & Singh, 2013;Günay, Winikoff, & Yolum, 2013Cranefield, Savarimuthu, Meneguzzi, & Oren, 2015). This research aims to automate creation of protocols at run-time, which requires agents to agree on a commitment protocol to regulate their interaction according to their own requirements.…”

“…Consequences: In general, the antecedents and consequents of the commitments are both composite expressions. Importantly, we need a mechanism to ensure progress by in essence breaking the symmetry, e.g., via a form of concession [10].…”
