Enabling Network Slicing Across a Disaggregated Optical Transport Network

Abstract: We propose and implement a network virtualization architecture for open optical (partially) disaggregated networks, based on a device hypervisor and OpenConfig and OpenROADM data models, in support of 5G network slicing over interconnected NFVI-PoPs.

“…A key advantage is that with full virtualization support, the SDN controller and other functional elements may operate without change, unaware of whether they operate on virtualized of physical devices. It relies on the concept of OpenROADM hypervisor [7]. Conceptually, it behaves like a hypervisor in the computing domain: a hypervisor is a functional element (e.g.…”

“…Finally, the need to virtualize the transport network has emerged as a key requirement to support functions such as network slicing and empower end users or to control the allocated partitions [5]- [7]. Tenants are given abstracted topology views of the physical underlying network and are allowed to utilize and independently control allocated virtual network resources as if were real.…”

“…Figure 3 (right) shows an example of connectivity service request, which includes the requested end-points (with references to service-interface-points), the requested capacity for the connectivity service and the service type. This connectivity service request, which is received by ONOS SDN controller, is translated in the necessary NETCONF operations towards OpenConfig and OpenROAMD models, as described in [8].…”
