Enabling mass customization: computer‐driven alteration methods

Abstract: Manufacturers have been struggling to meet the wants and needs of their customers without sacrificing the efficiencies and profits gained through mass production. Fortunately, developments in information technology have increased the probability of mass customization being adopted as an acceptable business paradigm. Almost every CAD system used in apparel patternmaking has some method that would enable mass customization through automatic alteration of patterns based on individual measurements. Although each h… Show more

“…Here profits from Cynthia L. Istook five kind of motion way [4] , obtains the method according to the this article most initial model and the control point in the pattern, summarized its basic motion mode and given the serial number, see Table 2. When we modify the pattern, we first determine all positions or lines which must be modified, then determine migration type, then according to the size result of comparison definite travel motion.…”

“…The apparel CAD system was developed to draft garment pattern [2] and show the effect of the final 3-D drape shape [3] . This article outlines the activities involved in setting up CAD systems to automatically draft the Individual pattern [4] . The foundation of digital mannequins supports the virtual display of garment for technology [5] .While the database makes the MTM System more convenient and quickly [6] .…”

“…The existing MC literature largely emphasizes the use of flexible manufacturing technology and information systems as important enablers of MC (Byrd 2001, Silveira et al 2001, Istook 2002. Recent developments in internet technology are also being explored to facilitate the implementation of MC systems (Chen et al 2001, Turowski 2002.…”

“…Mass customisation in the apparel industry is defined as a process by which the customer is able to walk into a store, be measured by a computer-controlled camera or laser beam, browse through the computer database of virtual 3D garments from a library of choices, try the garments on one's own figure in virtual space, select the most appropriate one, return in a few days, or even within hours to pick up the new, hot-off-the-assembly-line, customer-tailored suit, blouse or a pair of jeans (Fralix, 2001;Istook, 2002;Yeung & Choi, 2011). Mass customisation is the process of providing the consumers unique products when, where and how they want them and necessarily at an affordable price.…”
