Enabling conversations with web services

Abstract: The emerging standards for the publication of Web Services enable the invocation of services having simple interaction protocols, but they fail to support complex e-business interactions, where the peers exchange several messages. In order to extend the classes of services which can be invoked by the consumers, we propose a conversational model supporting the management of complex interactions between clients and Web Services. Our model supports the consumer in the management of a conversation which respects t… Show more

“…Speech act theory [27,8,9,10] has helped defining the types of messages based on the concept of illocutionary point, which constraints the semantics of the communication act itself [18, p.87]. It is also used as a basic ontology in organizational management systems [15] and in a conversation model for Web services [2].…”

“…Conversations are long-lived high-level interactions which need a peer-to-peer, proactive, dynamic and loosely coupled mode of interaction. Using agent conversations to enhance service exchange is an active research topic [20][21][22].…”

“…Notice that key GRID concepts presented in this section have been established according to the OGSA or WSRF specifications. Similarly, key MAS concepts have been established by different approaches in the MAS literature [22,28] but especially the STROBE model [8,9]. As we are focussing on concepts, we adopt the most convenient terminology from these sets of specifications.…”

“…Main lines of research about incorporating agent-based methods and techniques into Web-service contexts [14] include the extension of communication with more flexible patterns or protocols [1], which can support service-to-service negotiation [4,11] and dynamic service composition. For the latter, most of the proposed approaches are based on either pre-defined workflow models or in AI planning techniques.…”
