Enabling Coexistence of ZigBee and WiFi

Abstract: Spectrum scarcity is known to be main obstacle to scaling of wireless network capacity. Spectrum sharing is a solution to this problem. The unlicensed ISM band is getting crowded by WLAN and WPAN users and devices. Spectrum sharing within the devices of same network is not a problem. But coexistence of WLAN and WPAN (eg: WiFi and ZigBee) is a challenging problem. Spectrum sharing among these networks will surely improve spectrum utilization .WiFi and ZigBee uses 2.4 GHz ISM band. Different methods had been ado… Show more

“…Unlike the existing works such as Refs. [14][15][16][17][18][19] (discussed broadly in the related work section) where the system evaluations are performed either in simulated environments or in impractical environments, as well as in scenarios that lack considering some actual real network attributes, such as interference from other networks and continuous transmission from an interference source, that are very common in real world, our paper provides experimental results obtained from a real hardware-based experimental testbed located in an indoor environment. e main contributions of the paper relate to the performance analysis of a Zigbee network in the presence of a Wi-Fi interference network.…”

“…Because of this, the two technologies usually operate in proximity and they have to co-exist together. However, WiFi consumes higher power level, while ZigBee uses low power [10].…”

“…Because of this interference, a decrease in the performance of the wireless networks is noted. Wi-Fi and ZigBee are expected to run simultaneously in close proximity due to the demand for ubiquitous Internet access and increasingly, these two networks are being utilized in urban areas to support real-time and long-term monitoring [10]. Interests in using these two networks to coexist in different systems have intensified and one of these systems is in smart homes.…”
