Enabling Circular Economy: The Overlooked Role of Inorganic Materials Chemistry

Abstract: Circular economy is considered a new chance to build a more sustainable world from both the social and the economic point of view. In this Essay, the possible contribution of inorganic chemistry towards a smooth transition to circularity in inorganic materials design and production is discussed by adopting an interdisciplinary approach.

“…The utilization of all renewable resources available on our planet turns out to be the most obvious, and yet the most detrimental solution, particularly for future generations that will inhabit the earth. The search for the most suitable raw materials for the synthesis of new compounds is a challenging task, not only for economic but also for logistic reasons [ 6 ]. However, natural amino acids can be an interesting source to obtain new chemical compounds [ 7 ].…”

“…In this view, catalyst design has become indispensable in chemical production in order to increase the yield of desired products as well as reduce side products. 4,5 Zeolites are important catalysts in the chemical industry owing to their different benecial properties. 6,7 The greatly porous structure of zeolites which is composed of long-range interconnected SiO 4 and AlO 4 tetrahedra offers a high specic surface area leading to high dispersion of supported active metals.…”
