Enabling Bus Transit Service Quality Co-Monitoring Through Smartphone-Based Platform

Abstract: The growing ubiquity of smartphones offers public transit agencies an opportunity to transform ways to measure, monitor, and manage service performance. We demonstrate the potential in a new tool for engaging customers in measuring satisfaction and co-monitoring bus service quality. The pilot adapted a smartphone-based travel survey system, Future Mobility Sensing (FMS), to collect real-time customer feedback and objective operational measurements on specific bus trips. The system uses a combination of GPS, Wi… Show more

“…Previous studies regarded public transit equity based on riders' attributes and connectivity [8,[13][14][15][16]. First, as a method of directly collecting user attributes, surveys about riders' attributes, including cost, frequency, accessibility, safety, and comfortability are commonly used in transit equity studies.…”

“…These properties are suitable for proximity detection and interaction with smartphones, and for activity sensing [34,56]. A pioneering device-to-device ground truth collection on bus trips [66] already experimented Bluetooth lowenergy interaction with SBTS, as an independent and redundant measurement of users' bus trips. This system has the potential to release users' resources that could the be exploited, for example, for filling in context-specific active surveys, and not for validating a travel diary.…”
