EnaBILEing Growth in the Fetal Liver

Abstract: Blood stem cells develop at successive sites in the vertebrate embryo, but the functional explanation for this behavior is unknown. Sigurdsson et al. (2016) provide justification for transient fetal liver residence, where select bile acid composition, derived from mother and embryo, provides a protective environment, enabling rapid stem cell expansion.
