En face swept-source optical coherence tomography in neovascular age-related macular degeneration

Abstract: En face SS-OCT is a rapid, non-invasive, high-resolution, promising technology, which allows a complementary study to angiography of neovascular AMD. There is a correlation between angiography and en face SS-OCT images in neovascular AMD.

“…Further, by combining this high-speed imaging with en face technique, it produces simultaneous longitudinal and transverse images of the macular area with high pixel-to-pixel correspondence. This technique has enabled new detailed characterization of retinal diseases such as neovascular age-related macular degeneration, 9 Copyright 2017 The Authors iovs.arvojournals.org j ISSN: 1552-5783 chronic central serous chorioretinopathy, 10 and polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy. 11,12 Novel information on these conditions has provided us with information on the underlying pathogenesis of these conditions.…”

“…Optical coherence tomography is continually developing, and the resolution of the images is increasing. Advances include en face optical coherence tomography, swept source optical coherence tomography, 9 Fluorescein angiography has been also useful for localisation purposes and more specifically for extrafoveal photocoagulation, or for guidance during photodynamic treatment. 11 12 The risks of fluorescein angiography include:…”

“…1,12 There are always further improvements in imaging, such that now with swept source OCT, we can visualize deep structures in the posterior pole such as the choroid and therefore allow the ability to assess differences in choroidal structure with disease. 24,[92][93][94] More recently, there are devices that combine OCT imaging with angiography allowing blood vessels and flow to be determined without the need for formal fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography. With ever evolving techniques, we are sure to learn more about the ultrastructure and vasculature of the retina and choroid, and their changes in different eye conditions.…”
