EMuRgency: Addressing cardiac arrest with socio-technical innovation in a smart learning region

Abstract: This paper introduces the EMuRgency project. The project has the goal to increase awareness and competences regarding the problem of cardiac arrest in the Euregio Meuse-Rhine (EMR) and to use socio-technical innovations to transfer it into a smart learning region. Based on the conscious competence framework solutions for stakeholders on different levels of the framework are introduced, namely a public display network, mobile learning apps and a volunteer notification system. Finally, a future research outlook … Show more

“…In contrast to other handover projects, CLAS does not try to teach medical standards in any group settings but provides the target user with a mobile application to help memorize and check the important items of a discharge letter. This approach is in line with the objectives of the EMuRgency project which follows a similar approach using mobile learning opportunities for performance support to develop and sustain procedural knowledge for CPR training (Kalz et al, 2013).…”

“…However, in addition to simply providing information, mobile applications can also be used for performance support of defined procedures. The EMuRgency project (EMR INT4 1.2.-2011-04/070) is a socio-technological innovation project to increase the rate of firstresponder Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in the Euregio Meuse-Rhine region (Kalz et al, 2013). In addition to a notification system for first responders, the EMuRgency project provides educational support and training applications to help volunteers and medical staff memorize facts, activities and procedures to follow when conducting CPR (studies have shown that the retention times of CPR training decrease after approximately 6 months).…”
