Empowerment psychotherapy with adolescent females of color

Abstract: We present an empowerment model that fosters strengths and promotes positive identity development among adolescent females of color. Race, ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic status are integrated in an African American context. A case study illustrates a strength-based approach to conceptualizing and treating a young, Black adolescent female in her cultural context. We conclude with clinical implications for using an empowerment-based approach in psychotherapy with culturally diverse adolescent females.

“…For example, a clinician may wish to discuss with a client how experiences of prejudice, discrimination, and systemic racism influence their mood and eating behavior. Clinicians can also work with clients to develop a positive racial/ethnic identity and skills for coping with racism (Querimit & Conner, 2003), as well as tools for engaging in broader social justice and advocacy work (French et al, 2020). Relatedly, recent multicultural guidelines for psychologists (Clauss‐Ehlers, Chiriboga, Hunter, Roysircar, & Tummala‐Narra, 2019), social workers (NASW, 2015), and other healthcare professionals (AAMFT, 2015) encourage participation in advocacy and systemic interventions that may address the environmental roots of psychological distress.…”

“…La réussite des immigrants qui subissent de la discrimination est généralement associée à la résilience. L'autonomisation (empowerment) est une autre straté-gie proposée qui va dans le même sens (Dumont, 2007 ;Querimit et al, 2003).…”
