Empowering Adults in Recovery from Depression: A Community-Based Self-Management Group Program

Abstract: This paper reports on the development and evaluation of the Depression Self-Management Workshop (DSMW) that aims to empower participants to implement self-management behaviours in their daily lives in order to improve their mental health and prevent relapse. The 10-session intervention was delivered to 46 adults with depression who completed pre-, post- and follow-up structured interviews and questionnaires. “…The sample size was calculated using G*Power with the BAI based on an estimated effect size of the SMS + TAU intervention (Cohen’s d ) of 0.32 (0.56 intra-group). This corresponds to a 7-point difference based on previous studies [ 51 ] that have established clinically significant change thresholds for the BAI [ 69 ]; such an effect size at post-treatment for symptom reduction is consistent with previous SMS studies for mental disorders [ 25 , 35 , 37 , 38 ] as well as with pilot data of SMS (conservative estimates). The 3-point difference and SD for the TAU only group are conservative values based on our current data in a similar study with a TAU group [ 70 ].…”

“…Person-centred care has been characterized as an individualized intervention extending beyond psychotherapies in holistically meeting the PMDDs' unique needs (Gibbons et al 2019). Based on the literature, these included biological needs (physical health), psychological needs (self-management) and social health needs (interpersonal and social support), which could be fulfilled by integrating evidence-based psychotherapies through a collaborative or multidomain approach (Chang et al 2018;Cooper et al 2013;Houle et al 2016;Jahoda et al 2018;Lerner et al 2020;Nicolaidis et al 2013;Roh et al 2020;Rojas et al 2018;Yeung et al 2010). Accordingly, rather than addressing MDD in isolation, the above approaches aimed to jointly improve the PMDDs' overall health and QoL and manage their MDD (Roh et al 2020).…”
