Employment trajectories and changes in sense of coherence

Abstract: This longitudinal study provided evidence for the interpretation that stabilisation of SOC associates with stabilisation of the labour market position. Moreover, the fluctuations of SOC seem to depend on the type of trajectory throughout adult life.

“…It should also be noted that the respective reverse causality path from symptoms to career disruptions, which would have supported the selection hypothesis, was non-signiWcant. Our result is well in line with previous Finnish studies that have established a causal path from diVerent indicators of lower SES (e.g., unemployment, underemployment) and employees' health and well-being (Kokko and Pulkkinen 1998;Liukkonen et al 2009;Nätti et al 2009;Vahtera et al 1997; see also Paul and Moser 2009 for a review).…”

“…For example, in the Whitehall II study among British civil servants, it has been repeatedly shown that the detrimental eVects of low SES on health-related outcomes are much stronger than the eVects of health on SES (see Chandola et al 2003;Marmot et al 2001). Also Finnish studies-forming the context of the present study-have shown that indicators of low SES (e.g., unemployment experiences or career instability) prospectively impair health and well-being (Liukkonen et al 2009;Kinnunen et al 2005;Rahkonen et al 1997). In line with this evidence, our Wrst goal was to examine whether, among the studied Finnish managers, lower socioeconomic life conditions, assessed with career disruptions, predict impaired subjective well-being over time.…”

“…SOC was originated by Antonovsky (1979) as the fundamental construct in his salutogenic theory. Salutogenic theory is a health-oriented theory about the SOC construct and is based on the notion that people's orientation to the world provides them with the strength and capacity to resist distress and mental ill health in the midst of challenging circumstances (Liukkonen et al, 2010). Salutogenic theory thus focuses on describing SOC as an orientation to life which facilitates coping and thriving in difficult circumstances (Feldt et al, 2011).…”

“…There is a need to extend research to incorporate variables other than SWB in order to build our understanding of financial and psychological well-being dynamics. Salutogenic theory is a unique health-oriented theory about people's sense of coherence (SOC) established by Antonovsky in the field of psychological well-being (Liukkonen et al, 2010). A study by Barnard et al (2010) first explored the relationship between SOC and financial health (n=435), finding that respondents with a higher SOC exhibited better overall financial health than respondents with a lower SOC.…”
