“…Between 1999 and 2002, the average organizational tenure in Europe increased slightly (Auer et al, 2005). Further, labor legislation and job security protection are stricter in Europe and may also reduce the extent of outside hiring that organizations can undertake (Botero, Djankov, La Porta, Lopez-de-Silanes, & Shleifer, 2003;Schettkat, 1997). “…The multinational element of the data allows the assessment of the importance of labour market regulations and cultural norms on mobility patterns and turnover behaviour. In the literature there are very few cross-national studies on labour turnover (van Ours, 1990;Schettkat, 1997;Burgess, 1994Burgess, , 1999, primarily due to the rarity of cross-country panel data. These studies use data from surveys that are differently designed for each country under investigation.…”

“…Empirical research into the effects of EPL has focussed chiefly on its role in accounting for cross-national variations in the rate and structure of unemployment (see for example, Bertola, 1990, Gregg and Manning, 1997, and Nickell, 1997. 1 More recent work has examined the effects of EPL on patterns of worker and job flows (Schettkat, 1997;and Boeri, 1999). A final strand of research has attempted to analyse the impact of EPL on the structure of employment.…”
