Superannuation Scheme with five years' superannuable service who now leaves the N.H.S. before pensionable age will have his accrued benefits preserved in the scheme until age 60. Moreover, these benefits will be raised in line with the cost of living until they come into payment. This "most serious defect" has already been rectified through the efforts of the B.M.A. Secondly, the report also states the "the N.H.S.S.S. pension is now subject to revision by the Review Body on an 'ex gratia' basis." This too is quite wrong. By Act of Parliament N.H.S. pensions are reviewed annually by the Government and increased to keep pace with the cost of living, not merely by 5 % as advocated by the R.H.C.S.A. The B.M.A. is preparing a guide to the new provisions for hospital medical staffs and an explanatory statement. These will be available shortly and hospital doctors will then be in a position to judge the situation for themselves.
