Presently, computational thinking (CT) is considered necessary for adapting to the future. Concurrently, the COVID-19 pandemic has accentuated the demand for strengthening Environmental Education as a means to improve sustainability and stimulate environmental protection and public health. Having in mind that CT does not concern only technocrats but also applies in solving everyday problems, we introduce the novel idea of the synergistic learning of CT and Environmental Study. Thus, our research aim is to explore the correlation between algorithmic thinking (AT), as a fundamental CT competency, and educational achievements in the Environmental Study course during the early primary school years. Towards this end, we implemented a quantitative research study, employing an innovative assessment framework we propose. The adoption of cluster sampling eventuated in a sample of 435 students. The exploitation of ordinal logistic regression analysis and machine learning method validated the correlation of the two fields and pointed out that AT levels constitute a predictive factor for performance in the Environmental Study course and vice versa. These results support the novel idea of concurrently cultivating environmental consciousness and CT and build a robust base for future studies that will focus on providing an ecological reflection on CT activities.

Background/purpose -In terms of computational thinking core facets, algorithmic thinking is a key competency applicable not only in Computer Science but also in aspects of daily life. Considering the global phenomenon of gender stereotypes with regards to the academic and professional orientation in STEM fields, we focused on investigating the level of students' algorithmic thinking skills by gender in early childhood. This article provides evidence of research implemented under the umbrella of quantitative methodology, employing an innovative assessment tool constructed to meet the requirements of the study. The findings obtained could facilitate researchers and policymakers to support equity in learning opportunities, starting from the first stage of compulsory education. Materials/methods -The study aligns to the principles of quantitative research methodology. Its backbone is a digital platform of multidisciplinary, play-based, and constructivist character, which we implemented from scratch in order to satisfy the requirements of our research. Results -The findings of the study revealed that algorithmic thinking skills are not related to students' gender in early childhood. Conclusion -The findings of the study bring out that, at very young ages, the effect of gender stereotypes is not observable as far as students' algorithmic thinking skills are concerned. The implications of the study highlight the need to focus on the schooling stages that follow early childhood in order to tackle the gender gap in STEM fields. Acquiring, Analyzing and Interpreting Knowledge Data for Sustainable Engineering Education: An Experimental Study Using YouTube

With the immersion of a plethora of technological tools in the early post-COVID-19 era in university education, instructors around the world have been at the forefront of implementing hybrid learning spaces for knowledge delivery. The purpose of this experimental study is not only to divert the primary use of a YouTube channel into a tool to support asynchronous teaching; it also aims to provide feedback to instructors and suggest steps and actions to implement in their teaching modules to ensure students’ access to new knowledge while promoting their engagement and satisfaction, regardless of the learning environment, i.e., face-to-face, distance and hybrid. Learners’ viewing habits were analyzed in depth from the channel’s 37 instructional videos, all of which were related to the completion of a computer-aided mechanical design course. By analyzing and interpreting data directly from YouTube channel reports, six variables were identified and tested to quantify the lack of statistically significant changes in learners’ viewing habits. Two time periods were specifically studied: 2020–2021, when instruction was delivered exclusively via distance education, and 2021–2022, in a hybrid learning mode. The results of both parametric and non-parametric statistical tests showed that “Number of views” and “Number of unique viewers” are the two variables that behave the same regardless of the two time periods studied, demonstrating the relevance of the proposed concept for asynchronous instructional support regardless of the learning environment. Finally, a forthcoming instructor’s manual for learning CAD has been developed, integrating the proposed methodology into a sustainable academic educational process.
