Workplace health promotion (WHP) are often depicted as an opportunity for pursuing a better and broader well-being condition under the assumption that working environments affect the physical, mental, and social well-being of individuals who spend large proportion of waking hours at work. While most empirical studies provided medical evidence to the effectiveness of WHP programs, scholars question the instrumental purposes of these programs founded on the belief that “healthy workers are better workers”. Little is known, for instance, about the design of WHP programs and their acceptance by workers. Our study addresses this gap, analyzing the co-production of a WHP program in an Italian research institute promoted by the healthcare authority, the local government and the national center for prevention and security in the workplaces. To this aim, we adopt the notion of boundary object investigate how different stakeholders reclaim to take part and being involved in this process, re-shaping their goals and their boundaries and why a WHP program or parts of it may be rejected or re-negotiated by its recipients. Our analysis reveals how each stakeholder contributes to re-shape the WHP program which emerges as the modular product of the composition of each matter of concern. Most notably, the strong rooting in a clinical perspective and the original focus on only workers at risk is gradually flanked by initiatives to involve all employees. Moreover, workers draw a line as for the legitimacy of employers’ intervention in the personal sphere of health promotion, embracing interventions addressing diet and physical activity while rejecting measures targeting smoking and alcohol consumption.

Tyrimo pagrindimas. Sveikatos priežiūros specialistų darbo aplinka yra svarbus veiksnys, kuris turi įtakos dirbančiųjų gyvenimo kokybei ir sveikatai. Darbe vyraujant tokiems psichosocialiniams rizikos veiksniams kaip, stresas, ilgos darbo valandos, dideli reikalavimai, susidūrimai su pacientų smurtu ir mirtimi, pamaininis darbas ir pan., sutrinka darbo ir poilsio režimas, darbuotojams sukeliamas stresas, pervargimas ir kt. Ne visi slaugytojai geba atlaikyti nuolat patiriamą darbo įtampą, todėl padidėja nepageidaujamų sveikatos problemų tikimybė. Tikslas. Išanalizuoti darbo aplinkos veiksnių įtaką slaugytojų sveikatai. Metodai. Anketinės apklausos būdu apklausti 121 slaugytojai, dirbantys ligoninėse. Apklausai atlikti naudoti darbo patirties vertinimo (WEMS) ir salutogeninių sveikatos indikatorių skalės (SHIS). Rezultatai. Slaugytojų sveikata vertinta „Salutogeninių sveikatos indikatorių skale“. Bendrojo sveikatos rodiklio vidurkį bendroje tiriamųjų grupėje sudarė 60,96 balo, tarpasmeninių sveikatos indikatorių grupėse – 59,81 balo ir interaktyvių – 62,58 balo. Geriausiai vertintas bendravimas su kitais žmonėmis (4,38 balo), ryžtingumas (4,27 balo), emocinės pusiausvyros išlaikymas (4,20 balo), o blogiausiai miegas (3,74 balo), atsipalaidavimas (3,82 balo) ir energingumas (3,85 balo). Darbo patyrimo skalėje geriausiai vertintas prieinamumas prie vadovo, vadovo gebėjimas, prireikus priimti sprendimus, blogiausiai – vadovo konsultavimąsi su darbo grupe prieš priimant svarbius sprendimus. Darbo pokyčių srities teiginiai buvo vertinami blogiau nei kitų sričių, vyrai žymiai pozityviau vertino pokyčius įstaigoje nei moterys. Išvados. Teigiama darbo patirtis buvo susijusi su geresniu savo sveikatos ir savijautos vertinimu. Bendrasis sveikatos rodiklis buvo blogesnis tarp tiriamųjų su didesniu darbo stažu, jie blogiau vertino tiek tarpasmeninius, tiek ir interaktyvius sveikatos indikatorius. Jaunesnio amžiaus slaugytojai palankiau vertino pokyčius įstaigoje, o vadovavimo sritį pozityviau vertino slaugytojai, turintys didesnį darbo stažą. “…While there have been field-specific studies on the work environments of, for example, technical communicators (e.g., Rosselot-Merrit 2020; Spilka 2002) and translators (e.g., Abdallah & Koskinen 2007;Kujamäki 2021), limited information about the work life experiences of language professionals other than teachers exists in the Nordic context. From the perspective of other professionals, on the other hand, research exists on the meaningfulness of work, which has been investigated especially in care work (e.g., Bergman et al 2017). Bailey et al (2019), Lysova et al (2019), and Lepisto and Pratt (2017) suggest that while there is a growing interest in meaningful work and it is under review in various academic fields, there is a lack of consensus concerning what it consists of.…”

This qualitative study explores the changes that a specific group of knowledge workers – language professionals in Finland – have undergone in their work and how they perceive the meaningfulness of their work as a result. The data presented in this article has been collected through group interviews and is part of a larger data set. To make sense of our data, we use thematic analysis and the framework of meaningful work presented by Rosso et al. For some of our research participants, the factors of meaningful work are present. For others, changes in work, such as platform work and outsourcing, have reduced autonomy and development possibilities. We conclude by discussing the implications of our findings.
